Description

The training covers the basic use case for a supercomputer.

During this training, you will learn many useful Linux commands that will allow you to prepare and run a job on a Supercomputer. You will familiarize yourself with the Linux toolset to make your work on the supercomputer more convenient. The training covers basic Bash scripting.

It does not provide an in-depth description on how to run a job on HPC. That is covered by Running Calculations the HPC way training provided at ACC Cyfronet AGH.

Level

Target audience

Training is intended for people who are familiar with the basics of Linux and haven't used a supercomputer yet.

Agenda

  1. Environmental variables and storage spaces - learning distinct features of the supercomputer; variables, env vars, export, $HOME, $SCRATCH, $USER, $PLG_GROUPS_STORAGE,
  2. File permissions - understanding ownership of files; ls -l, chmod,
  3. Transferring files to and from the supercomputer - tar, scp
  4. Running a job and viewing results - sbatch, find, grep, mc
  5. Scripting in bash - for, sleep, date, seq, bc

Requirements

We recommend doing this training after familiarizing with the contents of Absolute Basics of Linux training provided at ACC Cyfronet AGH.

Participants' computers should be equipped with software that allows SSH connections. On Windows, it is recommended to use Windows Terminal (not to be confused with Powershell after checking if OpenSSH is installed (run ssh -V in the terminal). We advise against using Putty.

At 10:00 am on 23rd February 2026, a Dry-run will be held. Participants are invited to come to learn how to log in to Ares supercomputer before the training and resolve any problems with the Training Team

The workshop will be conducted online on the Zoom platform. The meeting link will be sent to registered participants.
