Description

The training introduces Linux command line interface with zero prior knowledge. 

We start at cdpwd and ls commands and then introduce more commands.

Level

Target audience

Training intended for people who never used Linux systems before.

Agenda

  1. What is Bash,
  2. directory tree - moving through the directory tree: cd, pwd, ls;
  3. managing directories - creating, deleting, copying, and moving directories and files: mkdir, cp, mv, rm, touch;
  4. reading files - viewing, searching through files and manipulating outputs: cat, grep, head, tail, mc -v, echo, wc, sort;
  5. writing files - using mc to edit files: mc -e;
  6. Q&A (15 min)

Summary of prerequisites

  2. attending the Dry-run,
  3. computer equipped with SSH connection.
Dry-run
  • On 12th Oct 2026 at 10:00-11:00 CEST, a Dry-run will be held. Attendance will be marked based on Zoom participant list.
  • Participants will learn how to log in to the Ares supercomputer before the training and resolve any problems with the Training Team.
  • In case you cannot come to the dry-run, please inform us directly at training@cyfronet.pl, otherwise your registration will be cancelled.
SSH connection

Participants' computers should be equipped with software that allows SSH connections. On Windows, it is recommended to use Windows Terminal (not to be confused with Powershell after checking if OpenSSH is installed (run ssh -V in the terminal). We advise against using Putty.

The workshop will be conducted online on the Zoom platform. The meeting link will be sent to registered participants.
